Report on the Anaheim Solidarity and Anti-Police march in Seattle on 7/27/2012
Police violence isn’t new. Recording it isn’t, either. What is relatively new, however, is the ability for everyone and their mother to bear witness to the events of the their world and share it with everyone else immediately. We’ve come a long way since Rodney King.
Anaheim has become the latest flashpoint in this issue, with residents calling for police responsible for the resent shootings to be fired. Multiple officer involved shootings have occurred over the past few weeks and many residents are hopping mad. Between the chemical fires, the lethal shooting of suspects and the less-lethal shootings of protesters and press, it’s been a bad stretch in the city of the mouse.
Because of all of this, protesters in Seattle held a solidarity march with the people of Anaheim last night. There were lots of chants of “fuck the pigs” and “All cops are bastards, ACAB” as well as “Police murder is a crime”. Police in bikes and vehicles followed from about a block away until they reached Capitol Hill. After several protesters started heckling a police officer in a cruiser the police on bikes formed lines and the protesters fell back. Late in the march several protesters sat on the hood of a news van, it started to drive away, at which point several other protesters started hitting the van. Police then arrested one protester with a skateboard. Video I recorded of the night’s festivities can be found below:
