Looking for Christmas
How do you celebrate Christmas as a Jew? And as an atheist one on top of that? These are questions I’ve asked myself over the years as I’ve enjoyed the company of my soon to be relatives over home cooked meals and gift exchanges.
As the religious aspect of the holiday seems to shrink over the years my reticence to buy crap for my loved ones has waned. I don’t feel like the Jew with the fake foreskin my parents warned me against during Hanukkah, nor do I feel like I’m celebrating the birth of a messiah. I’m simply buying toys to help spoil nephews, and a few affordable things I hope the adults will enjoy.
Normally I’ve done my best to avoid shopping malls during the holiday season, but this time I went out quite a bit to both get a feel for what the experience is like and to get footage. Most of the gifts I purchased were done so online but it was neat to see how the rest of the country lives. Some of what I found can be seen on my Youtube channel:
