On March 9th I witnessed a rally and march organized by Stop Patriarchy Seattle. They simultaneously protested two very different organizations, Mars Hill Church and Deja Vu Showgirls.
Much time was spent talking about the evils of pornography and Mars Hill’s vision of “traditional marriage”. The two were claimed to be the same due to them both “wanting women on their knees”.
It’s difficult to fault them for hating rape, violence and abuse. What I can’t agree with is their estimation of the source of these ills. We’ve had decades of increasing access to pornography and it hasn’t been shown to increase (or decrease) the crime rate or the rate of violence against women.
Above all this serves as a warning: don’t let your disagreement with the logic (or facts) of someone make you disregard everything they have to say. Rape is a problem in the US, but I don’t believe we’re going to resolve it by preventing people from looking at breasts.
