What is a hack?

1. A clever or elegant technical accomplishment. A clever routine in a computer program, especially one which uses tools for purposes other than those for which they were intended, might be considered a hack.

2. A temporary, jury-rigged solution, especially in the fields of computer programming and engineering: the technical equivalent of chewing gum and duct tape.

Sometimes being lazy is more productive than working hard. After all, that is what your robotic minions are for. I hope to aid you in your quest to find more time to read lifehacker.

When you have citizens coming out of houses to thank protesters yelling "fuck the police" you have problems that need resolving

Last night while watching OakFoSho's stream of the latest in Occupy Oakland's FTP (Fuck The Police) marches I saw people coming out from their houses to cheer and thank the protesters for chanting (among other things) "From Oakland to Greece; Fuck The Police".

March against war and sanctions on Iran (02/04/2012)

Today about 70 people rallied against war and sanctions on Iran at Westlake Park in Seattle and marched to the offices of KIRO-TV near Seattle Center in Belltown.

From the event description posted on Facebook:

"Join us in visible street protest to say no to U.S. war on Iran. Protests planned in over 30 cities so far. Take a minute and read the call for mass action below and spread the word quickly.

People aren't things we can sweep away

As much as we try to, we can't eliminate the problems we face by making them less visible. The earth warms as we drive to work, the homeless find shelter away from the public when dropped off at the county line, the children of those less able to afford good housing still get substandard educations and those who become ill still tax our emergency rooms even if we prevent their entry into hospitals.

Oakland Police attack and arrest citizens trying to feed the homeless (1/28/2012)

(Mass arrested at a YMCA in Oakland)

Yesterday Oakland police followed and harassed a protest march by Occupy Oakland, including pushing marchers with batons and knocking over a young woman on a bicycle and arresting her for damaging the pavement with her arms, eventually sparking a few protesters to respond by throwing bottles at officers telling them to disperse. Police responded with flashbang granades, rubber bullets, beanbag rounds and tear gas.

An open letter to Senator Patty Murray about ACTA

Senator Murray,

I'm a resident of Seattle and I'm concerned about ACTA.

This treaty will not reduce copyright infringement. What it will do is encourage countries around the world, including our own country, to pass laws stifling free speech, freedom to run legal software on hardware they own and to prevent "the progress of science and useful arts".

In short: call your representative and senator and tell them to discourage the president from attacking Iran.
